NZIM Diploma in Project Management
This programme, first developed in 2002 and kept updated until my contract with NZIM recently “expired”, is for people who are entering or actively engaged in project management. Those awarded this qualification will have demonstrated their ability to take responsibility for managing projects, including the work of others within a project team.
Incidentally, the “NZIM” title has now been courageously rebranded “IMNZ” perhaps to somehow revitalise those tired words “Institute” and “Management”, yet the phoenix-like logo has been shelved. But partnering with Massey should help with survival. I’m watching with interest.
Anyway, DPM programme participants complete four classroom modules and four assignments based on each participant’s real workplace project. The four classroom modules are covered in nine training days over four months. Tuition is based on the following SkillPower project management model:

Module 1 Project Conception. Main topics are:

- – Project terminology, parameters, challenges and structures.
- – Project stakeholder management.
- – Project selection, prioritising and definition.
- – Project feasibility and business cases.
- – Project proposals and charters.
Module 2 Project Development . Main topics are:
- – Project work breakdown structures.
- – Work package estimating and budgeting.
- – Critical path analysis.
- – Scheduling work including Gantt Charts.
- – Resource histograms smoothing, levelling and allocation.
- – Pre-empting implementation problems.
- – Project plan components.
- – Familiarisation with MS Project.
Module 3 Project Execution. Main topics are:
- – Leadership, motivation and team building.
- – Delegation and contract management.
- – Risk management.
- – Stakeholder management.
- – Communications and project control.
- – Managing performance, variations, variance, and issues and risks.
- – Earned value analysis and performance curves.
Module 4 Project Evaluation. Main topics are:
- – Handover process.
- – Project closure procedures.
- – Project evaluation and benefits review.
- – Post-project reporting.
- – Visit project sites.
- – Guest speakers.
- – PMBOK review, multi-project management, and recent developments.
- – Student presentations.
